English Folk Dancing

Group Description :
Since our first session in March 2022, we now meet regularly on alternate Tuesdays 2-4pm at Embleton Village Hall.  No previous experience is required as we will be doing fairly simple dances to begin with. Unlike Scottish Country Dancing, you do not have to remember all the moves before you start as the caller will summarise the next move just before you need to do it (well, that's the theory). All you need is light, comfortable footwear and clothing. There is no need to come with a partner as Folk Dancing is a very social activity, where you are encouraged to dance with different partners - some dances include moving on to a new partner within the course of the dance itself. Having the same number of men and women happens occasionally, but it's quite common to have more of one than the other, usually more ladies, which is just as well as men have been known to refuse to dance with another man, whereas ladies don't seem to mind.

There are thousands of dances from circle dances, to square and longways formations. You need a basic level of physical fitness, but you don't have to do every dance if you do get a bit tired. Folk dancing is also an excellent way of keeping those brain cells ticking as you (at least at first) struggle a little to remember how to do a reel such that it flows effortlessly within the dance. There's a lot of information available online with many dance videos on You Tube. If you're interested in joining us, do
have a look at the website of the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) here for a bit of background info. Our meeting dates are listed below.
