Science & Technology

Group Description :

Since 2005, this very popular group has explored the scientific world around us covering a range of topics that you don't need to be a boffin to understand! Our talks cover all branches of science, technology and engineering. They are very accessible and intended for interested lay-people rather than specialists. Over the years, we have had more than 300 talks - here's a small sample of talk titles to give an idea of what we've covered:
Chemistry under the sink; Isotope signatures - autographing the past; What have the Romans ever done for us?; People, phosphorus, & the environment: the evils of flush toilets; Radioactive waste - problems and solutions; Exploring the Night Sky from West Cumbria; Quantum mechanics and the Periodic Table; The life of Brian in four steam engines; The Anti-Kythera Mechanism; Allisons Chemists and the history of a Pharmacy in Cockermouth.

All U3A members are very welcome to join us as we continue to discover more about our world. There is no need to book to attend a talk – just turn up, but it is recommended that you register to join the group as you will then receive an email ahead of each meeting. The meetings are at the Methodist Hall, Lorton Street  in Cockermouth on the 1st and 3rd Mondays (with some exceptions when the Monday is a 'Bank Holiday') from October through to June starting at 2pm. The talks typically last 45-60 minutes and are followed by tea and coffee.
